Danny Martin's Route 66 Neon art books
In the summer of 2016, Arizona artist Danny Martin embarked on a two-and-a-half-month road trip across the country and drove the nation’s most iconic road, the historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica. During his pilgrimage, Danny documented the route’s treasured roadside neon signs by hand-drawing them on location. Having spent the majority of his trip pulled over on the side of the road and using a cheap piece of luan wood as his drawing board, Danny creatively captured the language of the neon signs and the distinct era of time and sense of place they represent. As he says, “the Mother Road’s neon signs are American ruins and a part of living history. I’m inspired by weathered abandoned signs just as much as the signs that have been lovingly preserved or restored.”
In all, Danny drew more than 60 portraits of his favorite neon signs along the way and now presents his work in a two-volume art book.
Volume 1, Illinois to Texas ($14.99, WoodandPulp.com), Danny explores the eastern portion of Route 66 by drawing signs he discovered of cafes, bowling alleys, donut shops, drive-ins, motels and more
Volume 2, New Mexico to California ($14.99, WoodandPulp.com), Danny explores the spirit of the west by drawing signs he discovered of motels, steakhouses, trading posts and more.
